Most of the town’s inhabitants are directly or indirectly related to the operations of the steel industry in the town and in the event of a slowdown, the economy of the entire city is affected. As the steel industry went through restructuring in the late 20th century, with more technology coming into the industry and different models of steel mills, like the mini mills, Gary’s plant was deemed less efficient and suffered the consequences. The fall of the inefficient plants in Gary resulted in declining populations, literacy rates, decaying infrastructure and increasing unemployment.  Those requiring corporate housing in Gary IN are likely needing it for reasons other than doing business with the steel industry.

The city grew rapidly as the steel industry flourished, and at its height, the city was 178,000 strong.
